Thriller goes down to the wire

February 2013

A very successful second tournament for our new Association took place at Pembroke Leisure Centre on February 24th. Thirty Two players including nine talented juniors took part in a Mixed Doubles Tournament.

There were sixteen pairs in pools of four and after playing all those matches, the four pool winners and four runners up reformed two pools of four.  They carried on in the main competition while the rest  formed another two pools and played a plate event.

After four and a half hours of competitive play, the main final came to a showdown between two Junior Club coaches and two Junior players.  Haverfordwest coaches Sarfaraz Malik and Suchitra Vijay took on Ben Richards and Rebecca Jones of Pembroke Juniors.  It was an excellent match and finished one game each and 21-19 in the deciding game with the delighted Juniors edging the result.

In their semi final, Ben and Rebecca had beaten fellow juniors Luke Pierce and Isobelle Hughes from Haverfordwest Juniors, while in the other semi final Sarfaraz and Suchitra, who also play at the Withybush Hospital Club had beaten Pam Davies and Biju Padayatty from the Tenby Club.

In the Plate final nine year old Lowri Hart did really well with the experienced player Mark Hubbard as they won against Dave Dreive and Claire Townsend of the Tenby Club.
