Players from Eleven up to over seventy had a great afternoon’s sport at Bloomfield, Narberth, in the 2015 Pembrokeshire Doubles Tournament in June. The fact that all the younger players performed so well was a testament to the fact that talent will come to the front no matter what the age.
The ladies played a round robin of seven pairs with the many hours training of young stars Lowri Hart and Erin Rees proving worthwhile as they came out on top. The runners up were the winners of this event last time round – Suji Subramaniam and Jenny Manuel.
In the men’s event it was last time’s winners, Sarfaraz Malik and David Judha who were again victorious with a surprisingly comfortable win. The ability of the much younger Dan Jenkins and Ben Richards was never in question but the experienced pair applied pressure from the off with an aggressive attacking game and took control. Ben and Dan will admit that nerves got the better of them and they were never allowed to get into their stride as the strong smashes of their opponents forced many errors.
In the men’s plate it was good to see a father and son pair winning with Paul and William Hughes proving a good combination. Will is still only fifteen and one of a talented group of young Pembrokeshire players doing well at tournaments and in the West Wales development group.
The youngest player in the tournament at only eleven was Daniel Kite who along with Lowri Hart is in the Welsh Under 13 squad. He more than held his own and got through to the final stages with his partner Mark Hubbard (who was technically old enough to be his grandfather!!)
Thanks to two of our junior players Maisie Kite and Hannah Douglas for being in charge of scoring and handing out prizes.
