Pembrokeshire schools have been taking part in their own 5 x 60 team competition with a format of five pairs taking part in each event. There were eight schools taking part in two area competitions before Christmas and the finals took place on Monday February 17th. Badminton Development Officer Phil Gwyther has been running the events and was pleased with the enthusiasm and sportsmanship of the players.
Pembroke School continued their grip on the winner’s trophy for the third year in a row. After good wins against Tasker Milward, Haverfordwest and Tenby Schools, the final match against Sir Thomas Picton, Haverfordwest was close, going in to the last match at two wins each. Pembroke took that last encounter to give overall victory in the tournament with S.T.P. being runners up – a repeat of last year’s results.
Like most counties in Wales, Badminton sessions are proving very popular within the 5 x 60 clubs in Pembrokeshire and the standard is getting higher each year. It was also good to see a number of girls competing and winning matches as well, proving that muscle power can be overcome with good racket technique.
